Paige Fogarty never believed Liebe Falls’ golden boy, Sterling Roy, could want a No Good Fogarty, but one magical night, they kissed—ruining her already murky reputation. Fifteen years later, she’s still shunned, now as a professional accountant auditing Roy Furnishings. It’s a daunting task even before she’s forced to work with him.

Sterling made a fool of himself over Paige once. Never again. He only returns to the factory his mother calls his ‘legacy’ to ensure Paige doesn’t pull a fast one. When their chemistry blazes hotter than ever, he wonders if he misjudged her, but secrets come to light, including an embezzler she tries to protect, proving she’s still the wrong girl. So why does holding onto her feel so right?

CHARACTER INTERVIEW

Let’s welcome Paige Fogarty, heroine of Dani Collins’ NOT IN HER WILDEST DREAMS.

Hi Paige, please tell us about yourself.

I grew up in a small town where my mother’s bipolar condition and my father’s womanizing marked us a family to be avoided. I’m a fixer—my ex-husband calls me a co-dependent—but I did manage to break out of Liebe Falls and take an accounting degree in Seattle. Taking care of family always draws me back, though. And who else is going to ensure my father doesn’t sign a lousy deal when his partner offers to buy him out?

What’s the difference between teenage Paige and grown-up Paige?

Not that much, unfortunately. Young Paige was tarred and scarred by her dysfunctional family, but she loves them anyway. Same goes as an adult. I’m a little better at taking care of myself these days, but I still lead with my heart which gets me into trouble.

Given the history between you and Sterling, how do you feel upon meeting him again, several years later?

Horrible. I tried to call him after That Night, but he refused to speak to me. Then he basically called me a slut on his way out of town, leaving me with a reputation that caused me a lot of grief. Fifteen years later, when he says bygones should be bygones, I initially thought he was apologizing for how he ruined me. Nope. He actually has the gall to try to forgive me! Like he was the injured party. Jerk.

What a jerk! But  you have to work together with him now to solve the mystery at Roy Furnishings. What’s that like?

Sterling is actually my only ally there. Everyone else feels threatened by my audit, so they shut down and try to shut me out. He has a business background, so we speak the same language. If we didn’t have this history, we’d probably work well together, but ugh. Every time I speak to him, I can feel eyes on us. Whether I sleep with him or not doesn’t matter. People assume I’m putting out. He tries to stop the gossip, but people love to talk and judge—especially his mother.

That’s horrible. What is the one thing that Sterling said that makes you hopeful for a future together?

I don’t see us ever having a future. There’s too much history. Too many people—including me, and probably him!—think I’m not good enough for him. When he saves my life, I start to think maybe he does have feelings for me, but it’s still really hard to trust.

What is the one thing you would change about your past, if you could?

So many things, but mostly, I wish my mom had been well. For a long time, I didn’t understand why she was hot and cold, angry with me and detached. It was rough and feeds into why my self-esteem is so hard won. So much of my life would have been different if my early life had been more stable.

Thanks a lot for your time.

Thanks for having me!
